I'm going to have to take the plunge and buy a ring mandrel. I've been trying to make these using a lipstick tube, very tricky Embarassed Looks like I'll need a vice too. It's so expensive getting started isn't it Crying

I love making those rings they are really easy to make. They look great with coloured craft wire as well. I usually use .8mm wire or thicker.
I don't use a vice I just rest the handle on the chair between my legs and the top on the table, it may look weird but hey, it works. You may be able to use a piece of wooden dowelling about a foot long. It should come off ok as long as you don't wind it too tight.
Here is another even easier version, the ends are just tucked away underneath the spiral.

If anyone is looking for a cheap but effective mandrel then you should try and get a good old fashioned spurtle as shown here

I have used one I bought at a local cook shop that cost me about £2 it's great.

Thanks for those further tutorials. I love making these, they're so quick to make although my efforts are a bit variable.
