I've been reasonably successful soldering simple stuff with 'easy syringe' solder. I thought I'd get some 'big girl solder' - medium syringe 30g tube so I could do more than a setting. However, I noticed the temp to fire is 750 and I only have a little butane torch suitable for small silverclay work.

My question is - should I just put this on the swapsies board now before I try and fail to use it?

A butane torch almost certainly goes to higher than 750C - it might be difficult to do a larger area, but it should still be able to heat up smaller areas without any problems.

You could always get one of the plumbers torches from B&Q or similar - they're only about £15-20?

My 'little' cooks torch goes to about 1200, and the big one from Lakeland does 1500, so I would have thought you should be OK. I've used all types of solder, including hard (on the rare occasion I need two-stage options) with this (though my soldering is still rubbish!).

If I remember rightly, easy solder has a working temperature of 690 and medium is 730, so it's really not a big difference at all.

Go on - have a play!

Thanks gals : ) I'll give my little torch a go then. Only wanting to do a setting with a tube bail initially. If I get into it I'll go for the next one up on Cooksons site. Trying to offer a bit more variety with my dichroic stuff.

I've just done some soldering this morning with medium solder and a small torch. I was soldering large jumprings and had no trouble at all. As Petra says you might need a bigger torch if you were doing a larger area but you shouldn't have any trouble with a bail. I've got a larger DIY store torch that I use for annealling - cost about £12.
