Hi, I'm looking for 5 or 6 strand box clasps for bracelets - at least 25mm (1inch) long. I'd prefer sterling silver /vermeil to base metal, but plated is better than nothing. Anyone any ideas, please?

I did use slider clasps but since I lost a bracelet when running for a bus Crying I've lost faith in them.

many thanks
kind regards

Gosh - this is tricky. There are loads of options for box clasps upto 3 strands, but the higher the number of strands the fewer clasps there seem to be. Here's what I've found:

Thanks, they are nice, but too short at 17mm. As you say, it's tricky.

website says they've just got a new supplier /new stock in so I've e-mailed them and am hoping they will have something longer.

many thanks for looking

I stock the 17mm 5 strand plated box clasps, and the 4 and 5 strand slide locks ( also plated). I can get them in sterling siver in very similar designs. There are two types of slide locks, the tabby type, and magnetic. the tabby ones ( which I have) are quite secure. I think the magnetic ones open more easily.

I can get a couple of sterling box clasps a 5 strand one with a floral pattern, 25x18x5mm and a marquiese design a bit squarer 31x29x4mm.

I haven't seen any longer in plated versions and the only vermellis were the slide lock designs.

Thinking outside the box ( no pun intended)

for the four stand ones, use two x2 strand box clasps....

for the five strand ones, use a 3 and a 2 in the same or complimentary designs... or two twos and a single in the middle. also means if one goes there's a second one. You could make a nice feature of them.

Don't forget box clasps ( the fancy bit) make great bases for dangly ear rings, just glue them to an earring post and use the loops for your dangles. So if you end up with a missing half of the clasp don't throw it away!!

The slide lock clasps are longer, so if you don't like the multiple clasps idea, you could try and tit a safety chain so if the clasp does slide open it's more likely to stay on your wrist.

The plated clasps are all in my shop on e-bay ( see the www link on the bottom of the message window) and the sterling clasps I can order.

How big are your beads???

Becks I have your 17mm ones. I'd be interested in seeing a picture of the 25mm sterling clasps - the plainer the better to go with the bracelets I'm making.

The cuffs are about 30mm wide, and I think using 2 smaller clasps would be too fiddly.
many thanks

A further specification - having tried box clasps with the opening tab in the side, I'd prefer to find another type, e.g. with the opening tab at the end, as the side openers are a bit difficult to open with the type of beads I'm using.

The 4hole ones from beadmerchant.co.uk are end opening (but not sterling), but the 5 hole ones are like Cheezythequiltmaker's - side opening.

I've ordered some from ebay shop Matur Suksema and I'll let you know if they work ok!

If anyone else sees any, please let me know.
many thanks

Georgia, have you a link for that ebay place, hun? The search isn't bringing up Matur Suksema and I'd be interested in taking a peek. Very Happy

The store is an American one:

I'll let you know how the clasps work when I receive hten.
The other thing I'm trying is putting the tab of side opening clasps in upside down - it seems to make it a bit easier to open

Sorry, I haven't worked out why, despite the fact that html is enabled in my profile, I can't switch it on when posting. The link above does not work. Let's hope this one does:

I have a new favourite clasp supplier. Having tried an American stockist who seemed quite reasonable until I found that the UK Post Office charges a whopping £8 surcharge to levy customs duty or VAT on non EU goods Crying , I have now discovered the German stockist below of good quality Neumann clasps: Beadreaming.

Look for the Neuman Specialprogram tab.

They are on holiday until the end of August (so some items are currently out of stock till Sept.) but are cheap with low postage costs and were friendly, quick and write in English, have nice, end-pull slider clasps and best of all, no nasty postage surcharges. Very Happy . Now if any UK supplier sells Neumann clasps, please let me know - I'd be happy to suppport you, but I haven't found you yet, and I do like the style and quality of their clasps
