Hey Nettie
I think the Kato version was in art jewelry mag as a project not so long ago. You might want to look at their website _________________ Lucinda x |

Thanks everyone, but I've already got the AJM. The tutorial is for the wire focal and I really want to know how to make the pods on either side. _________________ Nettie

I learned how to make (a sort of poor imitation of!!!!) Donna's pods like this (scroll the bar on the left down)

at the Clay Carnival a few days ago....they aren't hollow, so there's no mystery involved with hers, just skill, practise and great attention to detail!
I think you do need a nice firm, non-smearing clay though - the Kato clay we used was ideal and I expect Fimo classic would be good too.
But is it hollow ones you are after? _________________ Caroline. |

Hey Emma - yep - thats why I bought that mag.
There is also a project for one of the hollow pods in this book, which has a few nice projects in it (I love the etching technique).

Donna Kato also has a free tutorial on her website for her variation on the skinner technique that she uses for her beads. They are really easy to follow.

Great links Julie!
I had a feeling when I posted out that mag that it was going to a UK Beader! I felt it in me waters
Nettieing -Sorry - forgot the article was for his wire pendant. Hopefully the article shows enough ideas that could be adapted to make pods though. For instance it does cover how he creates those two-tone effects with layers of colour peeking through the holes he creates. I bet that combined with some of the other great tutorials and ideas on the web will have you making some fantastic solid pods combining all the different ideas toether.

As far as hollow pods go, at one class the other day with Natalia Garcia de Leaniz from Spain, we made hollow spherical things by making them in two halves and sticking together after baking. One piece has holes in it. Providing the two parts have the same shape at the edge, and you sand the edges flat so they fit OK, you should have no problem. We filled in any small gaps with a fine snake of clay and smoothed it in, then sanded after rebaking. _________________ Caroline. |
