Vikings could be the answer, Cathy.
I have a group who come every year do make Viking jewellery. They've been coming for several years now, a new class of children each year, and their visit has survived a change of teacher too.

If you go to Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! | you can see the range of beads he makes inspired by archaeological finds. I've seen the beads and they're gorgeous. _________________ ...the spirit of an elf and the lifestyle of a hobbit

Cathy,
I've only just noticed your question to me, with Lorraines new post so forgive me for not answering. You're probably well on your way now with your own designs.
I don't actually do anything with the children, they just come to the shop and choose their beads and threads and take it all back to school to make it.
They get a little talk from the teacher to think about what materials would have been available at the time, and then choose beads made from those. It's natural materials really...wood, metal, hemp, shell, ceramic. I think they make cord type necklaces often with a focal bead for the middle, but I've never seen the finished result. It's a bit of a fun activity for them at the end of the year.

That is fascinating! I had never really thought about how far back we had beads & I certainly wouldn't have dreamt about Vikings making lamp worked examples - thought they were far too busy with longboats & pillaging!
That has woken up the brain cells on this Sunday morning & got them thinking.
