Hi,

Does anyone here do copper soldering? I have done a bit of silver soldering and would like to experiment a bit more with copper soldering - for hammered jump rings, clasps etc - but am struggling to find out about it.

Most of the jewellery books I've looked at concentrate on silver and gold - basically what I need to know is what type of solder to use and where to get it from.

Thanks in advance!

Anne.

Copper is usually soldered with silver solder. This does mean you will have to take care that it doesn't show too much on the finished piece. A bezel or ring would have to fit very close together with the solder placed on the inside edges rather than the outside.
Here is a site with a lot more info

There is copper solder available, I think it's Monster Slayer in the US who sell it. Also, there's a trick where you solder with silver solder and then (I think) it involves something to do with pickling where you end up with the silver solder getting coated in copper.

Thanks for your replies.

Yes, had found a couple of references to the copper solder but none very positive and was coming to the conclusion that silver solder was the answer.

Ah, have just found this:

- a bit of steel in some used pickle should do the trick!

Thanks,
Anne.

My friend ordered copper solder once - lol - it was the dull grey stuff plumbers use but I've read on one of the US forums that the Monsterslayer stuff is copper coloured but very orangey.
