I am new to lampworking and was wondering how folks apply frit I have heard of rolling in the frit and someone sprinkes on the frit so what gives the best results ? Also what is the best for cooling ,fibre blanket or vermuclite

Hi. I put my frit into something domed or flat (depending on the effect I am after) and then roll my hot bead into the frit. I havent ever tried sprinkling it onto the bead. I always anneal straight from my torch into the kiln, but before I had a kiln I used vermiculite.

I tend to roll beads onto frit but sprinkle enamel onto beads if that make sense.

Maureen there are a few ways you can apply frit, my favourite is to use a stainless steel egg cup, turn it upside down and tip a little bit of frit into the well of the foot and just roll it in it.

Sprinkling only really works for the really fine powder like stuff anything larger and it just goes EVERYWHERE......I know

You can heat the end of your rod and dip it into the frit and then wind the bead too youget fantastic striations that way.

Steer clear of using ivory glass as a base though nearly all frits just turn black on it.
